Baler girls fall to Lions

Hollister High traveled to San Jose to play Lincoln in the first round of the Central Coast Section Tournament on Tuesday and was eliminated 5-1.

Hollister (20-10) had trouble adjusting to a smaller pool, according to head coach Derek Kisling.

“Once they got ahead, they clamped down on us and we had trouble,” said Kisling.

“We were crowding each other,” said Hollister’s Britta Nordstrom. “It was difficult.”

Nordstrom, who played her last game along with seniors Janelle Brandon and Stacey Lass, tallied the Balers’ only goal in the second period when she stole the ball from the Lincoln goalie and found the net. Nordstrom added 12 steals to give her 213 for the season.

Hollister had 11 shots on goal.

The Lions hurt the Balers on shots outside the 7-meter, something Hollister didn’t see much of when the two teams played at the Harbor Beach Invitational during the season.

“We weren’t expecting it,” said Nordstrom.

“They had some strong shooters,” Kisling said. “They let fly with it and it went in. The girls played hard. We won together and we lost together.”
