The San Benito JV baseball stormed through the eight-team Watsonville Easter Tournament, winning the championship.

Even though the Haybalers 10-runned two teams, coach Chris Moore said the tournament was more competitive than the King City tournament they also won.

“We’ve just been hitting really well this year,” Moore said. “Anytime we make mistakes, we turn around and fix them.”

The Haybalers are 15-2 overall and 6-2 in the Tri-County Athletic League.

Brenden Flaherty was voted the the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and awarded a trophy for his efforts.

San Benito defeated Monterey 5-4 in 11 innings Saturday for the championship. Offensively, the Balers had 13 hits in the game.

“It was a textbook-style game by both coaches,” Moore said. “There was no real big costly errors.”

In the 11th inning, Kyle Ferguson was hit by a pitch and was bunted over to second base. Flaherty, who went 3 for 5, hit a double down the line to bring him in.

Travis Ross went 3 for 5 with two stolen bases and an RBI. Jeremey Bosio was 3 for 3 with an RBI and was intentionally walked twice. Kris Bittner and Jacob Boyd both went 2 for 5.

San Benito scored two runs in the first and two in the fifth. Monterey scored single runs in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings.

Ferguson (6-1) picked up the win after pitching the final three innings. Doug Conte started the game, and Bittner came in the fifth inning.

In the first game of the tournament on April 6, San Benito defeated Soquel 13-3 and played an error-free game.

Bittner led the Balers offensively, going 3 for 4 with four RBIs. Jacob Boyd (1 for 4) and Josh Torrise (1 for 2) each had two RBIs.

San Benito got on the board early with seven runs in the first inning, and the game was called after six, with the ten-run mercy rule in place. Soquel scored its only runs in the third inning off of a home run.

Bittner (2-1) pitched all six innings for the win.

In the game against Monte Vista Christian on April 8, San Benito had 15 hits and again cruised to a 10-run mercy rule win. The final score was 12-2.

Ferguson pitched all five innings for the win. The whole Baler lineup was productive offensively.

Travis Ross (3 for 4 with 2 RBIs) and Jeremy Bosio (3 for 3 with a double and an RBI) led the way for the Haybalers.

Flaherty went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs. Conte and Matt Palafox were both 2 for 3. Bittner, Torrise and Boyd had a hit and two RBIs each.

The JV team, which is in second place in league behind Palma, will play non-league games against visiting Scott’s Valley Wednesday and then Friday at San Lorenzo Valley, where Moore graduated from in 1990.
