Hollister – On Monday, at the Tri-County Athletic League Jamboree, the San Benito Lady ‘Balers came in fourth place, beating fifth-place Pacific Grove by 14 strokes.

On Thursday, in the opening match for the Lady ‘Balers at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club, the Breakers reversed the result, and defeated San Benito by 15 strokes, 185-200.

“We have a lot of work to do,” Coach Chris Branon said. “For us to come in second place (in the TCAL), we need to get going.”

Marissa Gutierrez led San Benito with a 39 Thursday, as the two squads played the front nine of the Gabilan Course. Pacific Grove’s Haley Andreas was the medalist with a 37.

Rounding out the Lady ‘Balers, Katie O’Brien shot a 47, Amanda Frey carded a 57 and teammate Jordan Archer equaled the score with a 57 as well. Katie Moeller finished the round with a 61, and freshman Jordan Davies completed the front nine with a 65.

“I’m proud of all the girls, but especially Jordan Davies as a freshmen for qualifying,” Branon said. “She hit that first tee shot and smiled. It was a very good learning experience. She did very good.”

After Andreas’ 37, Katie Valencia shot a 45, Piland hit a 48, Bongioanni recorded a 55, Scates carded a 61 and Aung finished the day with a 65.

“We need to get working on some key areas for each individual,” Branon added. “For each one there is a certain thing that stood out with their swing.”

Branon said the “key areas” were simple things that need to be worked on, but that need to be worked on nonetheless.

The Lady ‘Balers will have an important team qualifier on Monday and Tuesday that will decide who will play in the squad’s following two matches.

On Wednesday, San Benito will compete in group play with Gilroy, Live Oak, Salinas and Alvarez at Twin Creeks Golf Course in Salinas at 2:30pm. On Thursday, the team will play a dual match against Stevenson at the famed Spyglass Hill Golf Course at 3:30pm.

“When league starts,” Branon said, “you’ve got to be in the mode.”
