The San Benito girls tennis team finished their season on a high note Thursday when they defeated Gilroy 6-1 at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister.

San Benito had lost to Salinas 5-2 on Tuesday in a match that clinched the Tri-County Athletic League championship for the Cowboys – an honor they shared with the Lady ‘Balers last season.

San Benito finishes the league season with a 9-3 mark, 16-5 overall, and second in the TCAL.

They will enter postseason play this weekend at the TCAL Tournament, which will take place on Saturday and Monday at Salinas High School at 2 p.m.

Each team will send two singles players and two doubles teams, with the champions in each bracket advancing to the Central Coast Section Tournament the following week.

San Benito will send singles players Hayley Barker and Bri Ahumada-Wolfsmith, as well as the doubles pairing of Abbie Woods and Amanda Marshall and the team of Vanessa Casalegno and Crystal Perreira.

On Thursday in Hollister, San Benito had their final tune-up before TCALs, and the doubles teams swept through their Gilroy counterparts.

At No. 1, Perreira and Marisa Ibarra defeated Kim Johnson and Holly Hunter 6-1, 4-6 and 11-9 in the third-set tiebreaker; the No. 2 pairing of Casalegno and Chelsea Yoakum beat Melanie Morelos and Ashley Gwynn 6-3, 6-1; and Rachel Smith and Lauren Ademek upended Cristina Carrillo and Viviana Mendez 6-0, 7-6.

In singles, Marshall beat Meha Munshi 6-0, 6-0; Woods defeated Emily Castro 6-0, 6-1; and Barker shut out Monica Liu 6-0, 6-0.

Gilroy picked up its only win at No. 4 singles, where Alyssa Castro defeated Kristina Slavich 6-2, 7-5.
