Volleyball: Anzar looks to rebound from tough 2013 season

Volleyball team beats Alisal 25-14, 25-19, 25-21
SALINAS

With approximately 11 more preseason matches than their opponent, the San Benito girls volleyball team opened the Tri-County Athletic League season Tuesday night, defeating host Alisal in three games (25-14, 25-19, 25-21).

The Lady ‘Balers are now 1-0 in the TCAL, 7-11 overall.

Last Thursday, coach Dean Askanas jumbled the lineup and moved Sam Klauer and Shayna Nakata, normally his liberos, to the outside and moved Sara Yamasaki to the libero position, supplying San Benito with three defensive specialists on the floor.

Askanas at the time called it the best combination of offense and defense he’s seen this season on the team.

“I think we played pretty well. Again, a good combination of defense and offense,” said Askanas after Tuesday’s win over Alisal. “So, I’m pleased.”

No statistics were reported.

San Benito will have their home opener Thursday when they host North Salinas at Mattson Gym in Hollister at 6:30 p.m.

More on this match later in the week.
