San Benito, after going 0-5 last weekend, will visit Notre Dame
of Salinas Tuesday

The San Benito girls volleyball team finished 0-5 at the Menlo Invitational last weekend, losing to Harbor, Woodside, Mountain View, Menlo and Harker.

Each of those teams perhaps represent the best the Central Coast Section has to offer, however, as four of them are currently ranked in the top 15 by the San Jose Mercury News.

“We knew it was going to be very tough and it really was a higher level of competition than we’re at,” coach Dean Askanas said. “But you try to take something positive from that.”

The positives could come from CCS tournament bonus points, which teams receive when they play league champions during the regular season, while Askanas was also able to see some positives from outside hitter Chelsea Freitas and middle blocker Emily Tonascia.

“Maybe that’ll give us a little more offense since we already have a lot of defense,” Askanas said. “But we knew it was going to be a battle.”

San Benito did, however, take a game from Harbor and a game from Woodside, two teams that swept them in three games earlier this season.

The Lady ‘Balers are now 10-17 overall and 4-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League.

They’ll return to TCAL play tonight, Tuesday, when they visit Notre Dame in Salinas.
