San Benito falls in three games to Woodside, 25-11, 25-23,

WOODSIDE
The San Benito girls volleyball team started off slow and couldn’t rebound against Cat Douglas and Woodside Tuesday night, and were swept in three games as a result, 25-11, 25-23, 25-20.
Shayna Nakata had 21 digs for the Lady ‘Balers, which fell to 2-4 overall on the season. Chelsea Freitas had eight kills.
Douglas, though, provided 21 kills for her squad.
“She’s a star hitter,” San Benito coach Dean Askanas said. “To our credit, we did dig up a lot of balls, but there were a lot of balls we didn’t dig up. Cat’s gonna get her points, but you have to stop everyone else.”
San Benito had a combined dig total in the mid-60s, Askanas said, but the team’s serve-receive and hitting continues to fall short.
“I like this team. It’s a good group of kids,” Askanas said. “But it’s gonna be a slow process on us building our serve-receive and improving on our hitting.
“We’re gonna keep working on it and keep improving on it. It’s something that doesn’t happen overnight. We know our weaknesses. We know our problems and we’re addressing those.”
San Benito has a chance to rebound this weekend at the 32-team Spikefest Tournament, which will be held at both Milpitas and Independence high schools. The Lady ‘Balers will open with Independence at Independence High School on Saturday. No time was reported, although pool play will begin at 8 a.m.
JV Note:
The San Benito junior varsity volleyball team won their match in straight games over Woodside Tuesday. No scores were reported.
