The stingy Anzar defense, led by sophomore center defender Sarah Finstad, played flawless soccer and held the Gonzales offense to four shots on goal.
Offensively, the Lady Hawks were led by junior center midfielder Carmen Morales, who had a goal and an assist, and freshman Leah Jimenez, who notched her third goal of the young season.
Jimenez recorded 11 shots on goal. The offensive attack was supported by freshman Sara Chatley, who peppered the Gonzales goal with eight shots.
“Our three youngsters (Chatley, Jimenez and freshman Rebecca Mockabee) really stepped up their game today and looked like veteran varsity players out there,” said coach Jesse Martinez. “I am especially pleased with the composure and soccer smarts shown by our outside defenders Mockabee and senior Jeana Coleman-Paulino.”
Anzar (1-2 in MTAL) plays at Soledad on Friday.
JV note: The Anzar JV team beat Gonzales, 4-0.
