Despite strong start, Gavilan falls 3-0 to Chabot in
softball
Gilroy – The Gavilan softball team continues to improve.
The Lady Rams held Chabot scorless through the first three innings before falling 3-0 in a hard-fought game Thursday.
Gavilan’s defense retired six straight batters through the first two innings.
In the third inning, Rachel Acosta threw out Chabot’s Pheobe Valderama as she attempted to steal second.
Despite solid pitching by Cortney Almaguer, Chabot came back with a two-run homer in the fourth and another RBI double to put it ahead 3-0.
Over the next two innings, Gavilan’s defense allowed Chabot to put just one runner on base.
Gavilan’s defense finished the game with no errors.
Gavilan head coach Nikki Thompson was pleased with the team’s defense and the play of Almaguer (3 strikeouts), Acosta and first baseman Ellie Gracie.
“We played one of our best defensive games all year,” Thompson said. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t capitalize on the runners we had on base and could not get the clutch hit. Our focus for sure (next week) will be on offense in hopes of getting a ‘W’ next week. The girls know they played well and are hungry to play again.”
Offensively, the Lady Rams started off shaky in the first inning. But Jessica McClelland started off the second inning with a single to center field. Almaguer and Danielle Jurevich both bunted and reached on fielding errors which loaded the bases for the Lady Rams. A questionable interference call on Jurevich, a strike out and a lineout to the pitcher ended the inning with three runners stranded.
In the fifth inning, Sheryl Lomonto got on base for Gavilan with a single. She stole second but was thrown out at third on a fielder’s choice by Acosta.
