Leone’s Lessons: How much time is too much time? Many golfers
spend more time than they need tinkering with their swing, club
selection or over-analyzing the shot.

The PGA Tour allows a player 40 seconds to hit a shot. On average, it should take only 15 to 20 seconds once you make your club selection.
When approaching your shot, first check the yardage and wind direction. Make your club selection and go through your pre-shot routine.
Note: it’s important to have a pre-shot routine. This will save time and eliminate any second thoughts in your mind. Focus on your target and swing.
Next time you’re out practicing, use a watch with a second hand to test how long it takes you to hit a shot. You will be surprised. If it’s more than 30 seconds you’re taking too long.
