Shelter’s new hours limit access for users
This letter is in response to the editorial written in the
Pinnacle on August 6. Thank you, Editorial Board, for bringing to
your reader’s attention the current change that our council members
voted on: the new hours at the animal shelter, which is Monday to
Friday.
Mr. Doug Emerson, you alone stood up for our animals and was the
lone vote in keeping the shelter open on Tuesday to Saturday. THANK
YOU!
Unfortunately the majority of the other council members voted to
change the opening days of the shelter days back to Monday to
Friday. There are two areas that will suffer from this new change
of days: the animals and the convenience of families looking for a
pet in Hollister.
Yes, Mr. Emerson, you do have it right:

I’m still not convinced it’s in the best interest of the public
to close on Saturdays, I think it’s in the best interest of the
staff and the administration.

Please remember one of the primary reasons an animal shelter
exists is to find homes for the animals there. The animal shelter
must be open when families can have access to them. I work Monday
to Friday and can only go to the shelter on Saturdays. How would it
work for your family if the gas stations, banks and grocery stores
weren’t open on Saturdays? Of course, it wouldn’t happen because
those in charge of those businesses know that gas stations, banks
and grocery stores must be open when people can get to them. The
same idea stands for the animal shelter.
Council members, please do the right thing for the animals and
for the people of Hollister. The visiting days at the shelter
should be the Tuesday -Saturday schedule. I speak for the animals
at the shelter that have no voice. Please listen!
