SJB Fire Department Slighted by St. Francis Fire Story
SJB Fire Department Slighted by St. Francis Fire Story

Editor,

In regards to the Saint Francis Retreat fire, to let you know that San Juan Bautista Fire Department was first on scene with a chief, one engine and a water tender approximately 7-10 minutes before any other engines arrived. The fact that your report sounds like San Juan Bautista Fire was not at the fire, was a large disappointment to my firefighters that made the initial attack on the fire, risking their lives to try to save the Retreat with what little resources we had at scene at that time.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Our report concerned the destruction of a beloved landmark, not who arrived at the scene first. We, like everyone, are extremely grateful for all firefighters who responded to the St. Francis Retreat blaze, including the San Juan Bautista Department. The uncertainty of emergency situations sometimes prevents reporters from speaking to all agencies present.

Thanks to the Community

for All of the Support

Editor

I am so proud of our community. As I write, these tears of joy and sadness flow because in Ron’s sudden passing to glory land. The whole community, the church family, one whole big family came to our support. You poured upon me and my family your love, encouragement, food, flowers, memorials, visitations and offers of help. What a wonderful testimony from our community. Words cannot even begin to express our love and gratitude to all of you. I cannot begin to name names for fear of excluding one of you. Ron would have been so proud of you all and I’m sure he is.

Thank you and God bless.

Local Mother Offers Roadside Memorial Alternative

Editor,

There is yet another alternative to roadside memorials. Visit www.roadsideremembrance.com and you’ll see the product I developed years ago. I had no idea at the time that I would place one at the site of my son Chris’s death. The memorial has held up well for the 5-½ years it’s been there and doesn’t seem to offend too many people. It marks a special place for us and a warning for others of the danger of the road.
