Pet Friends Yard Sale Not Best Time to Check Out Kittens
Editor,
We are writing in response to the letter from Scarlett Jones (“Downtown Businesses Should Try to Be More Customer-Friendly,” April 6).
First, we would like to thank everyone who participated in and made this year’s Pet Friends yard sale so successful. We couldn’t have done so well without those of you that donated your items for sale and your time to help.
Second, Ms. Jones, perhaps you would allow us to explain how we work? We are a nonprofit organization, solely funded by fundraising events, charitable gifts, and donations. Pet Friends is the only no-kill rescue shelter in our county.
What you attended was one of our major fundraisers of the year, our annual spring yard sale. Our volunteers spent the better part of two weeks collecting, storing, sorting and pricing the items for sale. They spent from the wee hours of Saturday morning through the late afternoon and then again on Sunday morning, working the actual sale. Then they sorted and transported those items that didn’t sell to other worthy charitable organizations in the community.
So, if we seemed a little tired, we are very sorry. We are normally open weekends from 10am to 2pm to try and pair our dogs, cats, and kittens (when we have them ) with families or companions.
Since the purpose of the day was to raise money, our volunteers were not able to accommodate your request. The lady and little girl you mentioned in your letter had an appointment with one of our directors that day.
We invite you to come and visit us again.
Thanks again to those of you that made the day such a success. For those of you who weren’t able to participate, we welcome the opportunity to discuss how you can help us in the future. Our next fund-raising event is our drive-thru tri-tip barbecue on May 6.
Remember, we “survive” exclusively from the generosity of the community and for their love of animals.
