Reporting on Police Cutbacks Only Makes it Easier for Crooks

Editor,

Well, now that our city and county administrators, elected officials and the editors of our two local newspapers have taken the taxpayers to task almost daily for not passing Measure R, you have made it so much more convenient for the burglars, car thieves, muggers and dope heads to prey on us.

You have reported, almost to the man, how many patrolmen would not be on the streets or even respond to our calls for help.

And how about the fire department? Would they respond if our houses were on fire? Thanks a lot, fellas. You really know how to hurt your constituency.

Oh, and by the way, I voted for Measure R. Not because I thought it was great, but I thought it was a fairer tax than the increase on my property tax bill and the sewer increase charge we are all saddled with.

Could you, Mr. Editor, please print in the Free Lance the salaries of the city manager and all of our elected city and county administrators and officials?

Thank you so much and may the God and Lord take a likin’ to us all.

There’s a Simple Solution to Problem at Highway 25 Ramp

Editor,

Regarding the story “Highway 101 Project Top Priority for State” (Jan. 18):

Widening Highway 101 from Monterey Street in Gilroy to the San Benito County line is a great idea, but the real cause of congestion there is not the lack of lanes, but the offramp to Highway 25.

The reason the offramp to Highway 25 is so bad is because people stop on it to let drivers from Highway 25 turn left to get to southbound Highway 101.

This backs up traffic onto Highway 101, sometimes more than a mile. It’s just like junction of highways 152 and 156.

However, the solution is so elegantly simple in this case.

Just ban left turns from Highway 25 onto southbound Highway 101.

If anyone on Highway 25 wants to get to southbound Highway 101, they can take northbound Highway 101 and turn around at Monterey Street in Gilroy.

That doesn’t cost anything, is of inconvenience only to a small few, and will have immediate impact to the flow of traffic in the area.

Why not give it a shot?
