New Residents Will Be Getting Too Good of a Sewer Break
New Residents Will Be Getting Too Good of a Sewer Break

Editor,

Raise impact fees even more! Why should current residents pay more for their sewer service when it’s NEW residents who will be taking advantage of the NEW sewer system? It makes no sense! The current system is just fine for those of us here now. Under this logic, if I want to add a new bathroom, I should go around with a collection plate to all my neighbors asking them to pitch in. Sound absurd? Welcome to Hollister!

Why No Halloween at School?

Editor,

As a parent of a student who attends San Juan Bautista’s elementary school, I disagree with the decision made by the principal to deny the rights of the kids to dress up this year for Halloween. I am also disappointed with the school’s last-minute notice of this decision to take a way a fun celebration that has always been a part of San Juan’s School history. Yesterday my daughter came home and said she was told that only the seventh- and eighth-graders were going to be able to dress up for Halloween.

I immediately called the school and the school receptionist said “YES” this was true and that she believed Mrs. Santana was going to be sending a letter. The kids wait all year for the one day that they pretend to be something else. Parents like myself look early for costumes and ideas for this celebrated day, even miss a day of work to wave and cheer, supporting our children in the little downtown parade.

I am concerned about the decisions lately that have been allowed for only certain students and with no explanation to the other students that have been left out. Taking Halloween is only one of those decisions, there was a change with only part of the third-graders that will now be able to have lunch and recess with the older kids, the others have no choice but to watch as their classmates leave out to the yard with the bigger kids. They even get to go on the field trips with the fourth- and fifth-graders. This has not been explained to many of us parents on why they would be allowing the younger kids out on field trips and on the yard, in the first place. I wonder if there is enough staffing or is this just a new policy that will continue without warning or even a schedule that will be practiced with no explanation. What’s going on!
