Rules Question — Showing Up Late
Playing in a two-man best-ball match, Deacon Curry shows up onto the second green after his group is hitting their shots. When can Deacon join the group and possibly help his partner by giving advice or with his score? Answer at the bottom of the column.
Golf Tip — I Said, “RELAX!!”
Many times in tournament play or even in a friendly game, we tend to tense up, which results in a bad shot. But “relax” is not something you can do. Relaxation is the result of the release or absence of tension, but the harder you try to relax, the harder it is to relax.
Oxygen is the enemy of tension, so start by taking a few deep breaths before you swing or putt. Stretching and slower movements encourages relaxation. Realizing that your next golf shot is not a life-or-death situation will help your mind relax.
Try telling yourself to breathe deeply rather than demanding yourself to relax.
Amazing Golf Quote from 1902!
“No power on earth will deter men from using a ball that will add to the length of their drive”
— Sports Illustrated, 1902.
One hundred and nine years later, some things just don’t change!
Warm Golf Balls
Cold-weather good news: Warm golf balls will go farther and feel softer than cold golf balls.
Bad news is that it takes 8 hours to change the temperature of a golf ball.
No matter how long or how many times you put a golf ball in your pocket to warm up between shots, you cannot change the temperature of the golf ball during your round of golf.
So on cold nights, keep your golf equipment indoors overnight before you play and your golf balls will stay warm throughout your round of golf.
Rules Answer
Rule 30-3a states, in part: “An absent partner may join a match between holes, but not during play of a hole.”
So, Deacon can play and give advice to his partner starting on the third hole.
