The San Benito County Free Library has launched “BookFlix,” an e-reading technology made available by the California State Library.

The program gives young children a new way to experience books, helping them learn to love reading and to become lifelong readers. BookFlix is presented by Scholastic and combines classic fictional video storybooks with similarly-themed nonfiction e-books aimed at children in grades pre-K to third grade.

The program is available through the library’s website at www.sanbenitofl.org where children can see their favorite stories come to life on the screen, turning pages electronically.

The program offers 95 fiction and nonfiction pairings, with 25 available in Spanish. Some of the pairings including “Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type” and “Let’s Visit a Dairy Farm;” “The Snowy Day” with “Snowy Weather Days” and more.

Special features include read along options that provide word-by-word highlighting, narrated text and vocabulary definitions, educational games, activities, biographies, interviews and age-appropriate web links to explore the topics further.

The San Benito County Free Library is also seeking families who are interested in joining a bilingual Spanish and English program called “ABC Express,” which is funded through grants from the Library Services and Technology Act.

The free program is intended for children ages 3-5 who are on a waiting list for preschool or have not yet had the opportunity to be enrolled.

The idea is to encourage reading readiness and preparation, with both parents and children participating together. All attendees are provided with free literacy resources and materials, and the use of laptops that have pre loaded literacy activities for children.

The next session of the “ABC Express” will run Aug. 24 to Sept. 21, on Wednesdays, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at the San Benito County Free Library, 470 Fifth St., in Hollister. For more information or to enroll, call 634-4107. There are a limited number of spots available for the program so call to register.
