Staff Reports
The four Hollister 9-10-year-old All-Star teams remained undefeated after the first two days of the District 9 tournament at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Hollister on Wednesday.
The Hollister National “B” team, managed by Mark Haworth of the Triple A Cardinals, beat Ferrasci 6-2 in the opening game Wednesday and then defeated North County 13-3 Thursday night in the second round.
The American “A” team, managed by Robert Fabing of the major league Yankees, began its tournament by pounding King City 1 Thursday.
Hollister American’s “B” team, led by manager Manny Amaral of the TOC champion Triple A Twins, won its opener 5-4 over Soledad.
Hollister National “A”, which returns five players from last year’s district championship team and is managed by Todd Freitas of the major league Cardinals, got 13 strikeouts from three pitchers in its victory over King City.
Tyler Fhurong struck out eight of the nine batters he faced in three innings before yielding to Andrew Breen, who struck out three and allowed one run in his one inning on the mound. Dylan Lomanto threw the bottom of the fifth inning and struck out two to close out the game, which was called due to the 10-run rule.
Fhurong had two hits, walked twice, and scored twice to spark the National team, which also had a hit and two runs from Lomanto, a double by Nathan Alvarez, and two runs scored by Matt Hawk.
Hollister National stays alive in 11/12 all-star tourney
The Hollister National 11/12 All-Stars overcame a late charge by North County to win their second game of the District 9 tournament 6-4 on Thursday. Hollister will play Hartnell at 5:30pm tonight at American Little League’s park in Salinas.
Starting pitcher Ryan Jacob scattered two hits, gave up one run, and struck out nine batters in five innings for Hollister, which is 2-1 in the double elimination tournament.
Hollister got on the board in the first innings after Matt Vallejo led off with a double to the right center field wall, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Jacob.
In the second inning, Emmett King reached on an error and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Donati. Keegan Bielejec followed with a double to the right field wall to put runners at second and third for Vallejo, who grounded out to first to knock in King.
Michael Breen doubled off the right field wall to score Bielejec and put Hollister National up 3-0.
Hollister pushed across two more runs in the fourth when Geronimo Sevilla hit an infield single, stole second, and scored on an Emmett King single. Andrew Donati hit a double to plate King and extend the team’s lead to 5-0.
In the fourth inning, Jacob singled and was driven home by a Tyller Smith double to add a sixth run for Hollister.
After North County pushed across a run in the top of the fifth on an error to make the score 6-1, Hollister was retired in order in the bottom of the inning.
Reliever Skyler King was touched for three runs in the top of the sixth, but a North County runner was thrown out at third base trying to extend a double into a triple to end the game.
If Hollister wins tonight, it will play again at noon on Sunday at Salinas Atlantic’s field.
