Assemblyman Luis Alejo

Three days before she was sworn in as a Watsonville councilwoman on Tuesday, Karina Cervantez wed Assemblyman Luis Alejo, D-Watsonville, in a ceremony at Mission San Juan Bautista.

Alejo, who represents San Benito County in the State Assembly, previously held the District 2 seat now represented by Cervantez.

Monterey Diocese Bishop Richard Garcia conducted Saturday’s wedding ceremony. Councilman Felipe Hernandez was the best man.

The couple cemented their political and romantic alliance during a seven-year courtship.

Alejo, a lawyer who worked for California Rural Legal Assistance and the Monterey County Superior Court before first winning state office in 2010, is starting his second term in Sacramento. Cervantez, a former city planning commissioner, is a doctoral candidate in psychology at UC Santa Cruz and a lecturer at Cal State Monterey Bay.
