Cold Temperatures Benefit San Benito Cherry Growers

Hollister – Mother Nature is bringing an early Christmas gift to cherry farmers in San Benito County and throughout the state. The California Cherry Advisory Board said this week that frosty November and December weather causes trees to go dormant. Cherries and other deciduous trees like apples depend on chilling during the off-season to prompt a strong bloom in the spring. For 2005, 606 acres were devoted to growing cherry trees in San Benito County. These trees produced 2,000 tons of fruit, for a crop valued at $4,992,000 and were the most profitable fruit of the year. Consumers will find ripe cherries in supermarkets in time for Christmas, in the form of imports from Chile. California-grown cherries will be available again next May.
