No longer are the California Lookouts just a-second place team. The Lookouts, Hollister’s 15U traveling baseball team, won the championship at the Sacramento County baseball tournament in Elk Grove on July 23-25 after finishing second twice before.
The tournament did not start well for the Lookouts. They lost their first game 8-3 to the P-Town Players from Petaluma.
Even though Isaiah Zamorez and Kevin Medeiros combined to pitch a four-hit game, the Lookouts’ bats were quiet and they were only able to score one earned run in the loss.
The Lookouts bounced back in the second game to defeat the Modest All-Star Knights 5-2. Adrian Monroy, who attends Anzar High School, took the mound and pitched a complete game.
He struck out seven Knights and allowed six hits in the victory.
Ronnie Fhurong pitched in the third game of the day and allowed only two hits as the Lookouts defeated the Florin Panthers (Sacramento) 17-1.
The game was called in the third inning due to the mercy rule.
On Sunday, the Lookouts moved into the semifinals to play the Westside Bulldogs (Newman), the first place team in pool B.
The Lookouts defeated the Bulldogs 2-1. Ronnie Fhurong pitched 6 2/3 innings for the win. Kevin Medeiros relieved Fhurong to record a save, striking out the last batter with the bases loaded.
In the finals, the Lookouts had to face the P-Town Players once again. Brian Reader, who attends Palma, pitched a four-hit game to lead the team to 5-1 win.
Clutch defensive plays by Jason Andrade, Kolton Klauer and Aaron Schulman frustrated the P-Town offense the entire afternoon.
Fhurong was recognized as the tournament’s defensive Most Valuable Player after he pitched the Lookouts to two victories.
Several players performed well offensively throughout the tournament. Evan Bolton (Los Gatos High School) batted .444, and Jason Andrade (San Benito High) and Michael Graham (Seaside High School) each batted .333.
Medeiros batted .500 for the tournament and received the offensive Most Valuable Player award.
