Hollister residents will soon be saving time, gas and money once the new Lowe’s home-improvement store opens its doors next year in Hollister.

San Benito County has approved the entire project, said Art Henriques, county planning director. Lowe’s is proposing multiple building phrases, he said.

The building permit is ready for pickup and the first phrase of construction can begin, he said.

Residents have to travel to Gilroy if they want to shop at Lowe’s. In Hollister it will be at the northwest quadrant of Hillcrest Road and the Highway 25 bypass.

The store is planned to open during the second quarter of 2009 and will be 117,000 square feet with an additional 31,600 square feet for a garden center, according to a Lowe’s press release.

The average investment in the community is approximately $18.5 million, the company estimates. The opening of Lowe’s could generate up to 175 new jobs.

The retailer is known for helping homeowners find the right equipment and supplies to build, improve, beautify and enjoy their homes, according to the press release.

The store will offer more than 40,000 products to customers.

Lowe’s is the second largest home-improvement retailer in the world.
