Hollister High’s Octavio Lucatero narrowly missed out on first place at the 35-team Coyote Wrestling Classic in Bakersfield last weekend.

Lucatero made it to the finals at 140 pounds and lost a 7-1 decision to Mark Marquez of East Bakersfield.

“It was closer than the score indicated,” said Baler head coach Matt Olejnik. “Marquez had a late takedown in the first and third periods.”

A takedown is worth two points.

The Balers, as a team, finished in eighth place with a 123 points. Bakersfield, the defending state champion, had 259 points to take first.

“We showed that we’ll score points at the section meet,” said Olejnik. “Now we’re looking for a couple of guys to step up and take at least second in the section. Because everyone scored points for us at this tournament.”

The Balers had five place finishers. Beside Lucatero:

Tito Flores made it the heavyweight semis before losing.

Brent Kelsey placed sixth at 130 pounds.

Alex Diaz was seventh at 145 pounds.

Anthony Sunseri was eighth at 135 pounds.

The Balers are at the Reno Tournament of Champions this weekend.
