Paying tribute to war veterans brings a community together, and Veterans Day is a time to remember those who died protecting our freedom.
During a time when terrorist attacks still shocks a nation, it is appropriate to honor veterans who served their country, not only in times of conflict but who continue to serve their community as police officers and firefighters.
“It’s more meaningful now after Sept. 11 because it brings home the fact (that) you never know,” said Marley Holte, president of the San Benito County League of United Latin American Citizens.
To show gratitude and respect for local veterans, the San Benito County LULAC Council is sponsoring the ninth Annual Veterans Breakfast Monday, Nov.11 from 7-11 a.m. This year’s event will be held in the San Benito High School cafeteria since the Veterans Memorial Building is being revamped.
Cost for the buffet-style breakfast is $6 per person and proceeds go to the LULAC scholarship fund.
LULAC will pay special tribute to three veterans – Calvin Turpin, past American Legion national chaplain; Jim Caffiero, a guidance counselor at San Benito High School; and Vince Luna, a Vietnam veteran and American Legion adjutant and past post commander.
Part of the program is for family members and friends with a memorial table set up to display photos of deceased veterans.
“The family will get up and talk about their son or brother, who they were and what they meant to them,” Holte said. “It’s really a nice way to pay tribute to them.”
The breakfast will be served before and during the Veterans Day parade, which will start at 10 a.m. and run for about an hour.
“We would like to see more vets join in the parade,” Holte said. “We welcome them.”
