Hollister – Superior Court Judge Harry Tobias slapped Los Valientes attorney Mike Pekin’s law firm with an $800 fine last week for not following proper civil procedure during a motion hearing for dismissal of the contentious civil rights suit.
District Attorney John Sarsfield brought the suit against Pekin and the anonymous group in 2004 alleging they violated the civil rights of eight local elected officials and business owners through extortion and by filing false lawsuits.
Pekin said he would address the court’s concerns and would evaluate whether the fine was appropriate.
Sarsfield called the fine “further evidence of the court’s impatience with Mr. Pekin’s legal tactics.”
The suit is still pending while both parties continue with discovery.
