The San Benito girls soccer team defeated Notre Dame 4-1 Saturday afternoon in Salinas and is poised to give Tri-County Athletic League frontrunner Live Oak a run for its money.

The first time around, Live Oak rallied back in the second half after the Balers scored first.
The Balers got on the board against Notre Dame with a goal in the 36th minute from Jenny Maheu from an assist from Rose Vandenberg.
Maheu also scored the second goal on a header from a corner kick by Julie Broyer in the 46th minute.
But the Spirits answered back on a free kick from about 25 yards out that just cleared the fingertips of Hollister goalkeeper Mary Von Urff, making it 2-1 in the 53rd minute.
About five minutes later, on another assisted pass from Vandenberg, Maheu put in goal number three for her hat trick.
The game was sealed in the 69th minute after Vandenberg showcased some fancy footwork and dribbled through several Spirit defenders for the goal.
Hollister outshot Notre Dame 15-5, and Von Urff had to touch the ball only twice, said Baler coach Mike Schurig.
JV Note: The JV Hollister team won its fifth consecutive league game, defeating Notre Dame, 2-1. Goals were scored by Vanessa O’Campo and Erika Trujillo early into the game.
The Balers were missing center defender Nicole Silviera and sweeper Jessica Liedenberg. Becky Darnell filled in Liedenberg’s spot and did a beautiful job, said coach Monica Sandoval.
Kassie Kearns headed the defense with great support from Sarah Mullen and Zoraya Martinez. Eva Esparza filled in at center midfield and also did a good job.
The only goal that Notre Dame scored came as the result of a foul outside the box. Melissa Aguilar made a nice defensive attempt to stop the shot, but was perfectly placed in the corner.
