Jenny Maheu recorded her second hat trick of the year Wednesday to help the San Benito girls soccer team dismiss visiting Seaside in a 5-0 win.

San Benito (4-4-1) was able to generate good offensive production from its midfielders and had several quality shots.

Coach Mike Schurig said he was trying to generate a little more offense, especially from the midfielders, after the 1-0 loss to Soquel on Friday.

“It was a good game to give us a chance to do some of the things that we have been working on – communication and passing the ball back for a shot,” Schurig said.

The third goal the Balers scored came on a ball that was passed from Michele Sanchez back to midfielder Chantel Guajardo, who took the shot from just outside the 18.

Amy Baxter and Lizzy Schurig also were able to get some shots off from the midfield.

Goalie Mary Von Urff once again had a solid performance in the net for the Balers. She stopped all four shots on goal she was given in the first half.

Freshman backup Ashley Perreira stopped the only shot she faced during her time during the final 15 minutes of the game.

Rose Vandenburg, who had one unassisted goal during the game and one assist to Maheu, had some nice moves but couldn’t get any more shots to fall inside the 18.

Maheu scored two of her goals off perfectly placed corner kicks by Julie Broyer.

“We talked a lot this week about the support of the bench that is not going to get as much playing time during games,” Schurig said. “We got to play everybody today. All 19 players were able to contribute in some way.”

The Balers will play at Pioneer on Friday. Pioneer, which is currently undefeated, will be a measuring point for the Balers to judge where they are at right now, Schurig said.

“We have to have the mentality that we would against Live Oak,” Schurig said. “We had that type of mentality against Soquel. Our biggest weakness was not having enough shots. If we had the confidence that we had today, that game could have been different. If it is close one way or the other, I will be happy.”

San Benito is trying to get ready for its first league game Jan. 8 against visiting Live Oak, who is favored to win the Tri-County Athletic League title.
