advance at the Tri-County Athletic League Championships at North
Salinas High.
Salinas – San Benito’s Amanda Marshall won a pair of matches Monday to advance at the Tri-County Athletic League Championships at North Salinas High.

Marshall opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Susie Ngoi of Everett-Alvarez. She followed that up with a 6-1, 6-2 win over North Salinas’ Laura Sanchez in the second round to advance to Wednesday’s semifinals.

The ‘Balers’ No. 1 player will face off against top-seeded Kelsey Nicks of Salinas, who has beat Marshall twice this season.

“That’ll be a tough match for her,” San Benito coach Ed Cecena said. “Kelsey’s definitely the best player in the league. Amanda knows that she has to step up her game. She’s got to be able to play her best match.”

San Benito’s Elizabeth Gatto beat Alvarez’ Simone Gee 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the second round, where she lost to Notre Dame’s Alexis Pressas, 6-2, 6-1.

Both ‘Balers doubles team also did not advance to Wednesday’s semifinal round.

Michelle Rovella and Rebecca Williams teamed up for a 6-0, 6-4 win over a doubles pair from Alisal and then fell to Notre Dame in the second round 6-1, 6-0.

San Benito’s Elena Fata and Abby Woods were knocked out with a 6-4, 6-1 first-round loss to North Salinas.

Gilroy’s No. 1 and 2 singles and doubles teams were all ousted in straight sets.

Alissa Castro and Emily Castro lost in singles, and the teams of Holly Hunter-Karissa Tellez and Kim Johnson-Natalie Toews.
