Hawks drop fifth straight in 73-49 loss at Gonzales
GONZALES

Despite a 20-point performance from Jason Merz, the Anzar High boys basketball team lost 73-49 at Gonzales on Monday night, their fifth straight loss in the Mission Trail Athletic League.

The Hawks are now 1-6 in the MTAL, 1-14 overall.

Anzar’s Isaac Staley and Devon Parish each had five points apiece in the loss.

Gonzales’ Junior Banuelos had 21 points for the Spartans, which improve to 2-5 in the MTAL, 3-12 overall. Teammate Matthew Lopez had 12 points.

Anzar held tight with Gonzales early on, as the two team’s were knotted at 12 after the first quarter.

But Gonzales blew the game open in the remaining three quarters when they outscored Anzar 61-37.

The Hawks will return to San Juan Bautista on Friday when they host Stevenson at 7 p.m.
