The Monte Carlo night club and restaurant is closing shop downtown after less than three months in operation, and the building owner believes there isn’t enough encouragement as there should be for such new businesses.

Monte Carlo opened in late November at the former location of The Vault restaurant at the corner of Fifth and San Benito streets. It served as a night club on weekend nights starting at 10 p.m., while the restaurant portion catered to lunch and dinner crowds as well.

It took over for The Vault, which building and restaurant owner Ignacio Velazquez ran for a decade, including a brief stint two years ago in which another restaurant, Country Rose Cafe, nearly leased the space.

Velazquez attributed the Monte Carlo owners’ decision to a “mix of things” but did point out an increased police presence there as of late.

As for the city, he said officials “need to plan where they want to go with these things.”

“If that means they don’t want any night club or entertainment, they need to say, ‘100 percent, we don’t want it,'” Velazquez said.

Monte Carlo’s co-owner Steve Savinovic could not be reached before press time.

Regarding police activity, Hollister Police Department spokesman Sgt. David Westrick, when asked shortly before Pinnacle press time, said he would research any potential activity at the business and report back with the information.

As for Monte Carlo’s owners, Velazquez said they’re “definitely done.” Velazquez said the parties recently sat down and worked out the details. Hollister’s location had been the third Monte Carlo, which has operations in Mountain View and Seattle.
