Toreadors beat Hawks 64-24, Anzar falls to 1-2
MONTEREY
The Anzar High girls basketball team was held to single digits in each quarter Wednesday as host Monterey pulled rank and bested the Hawks 64-24.
Freshman Kelsey Robledo led Anzar with nine points, seven rebounds and three steals, and Alyssa Rodriguez added four points, eight rebounds and seven steals. Allison Baker supplied the Hawks with four points, three rebounds and two steals.
But Anzar didn’t score more than eight points in any quarter, however, including a first quarter when Monterey outscored the Hawks 11-1.
Anzar head coach Aaron Netzel said his team’s youth was exposed.
“We were talking about being mentally tough and not being intimidated,” Netzel said. “We had flashes, but Monterey is just powerhouse. You’ve got to be mentally ready to go into an opponents gym and be ready to play, and we didn’t do that.”
Monterey is a Division III team compared to Anzar’s Division V status.
The Toreadors held a 27-9 lead at halftime, and increased it to a 43-17 margin through three full quarters.
Anzar’s Liliana Resendez had four points.
“This is the best opponent we’ve played so far, and it’s one of the best teams I anticipate we’ll play all season,” Netzel said. “But only time will tell that.”
The Hawk (1-2) will visit Monte Vista Christian on Friday. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
