Another week gone by and Red Phone’s been ringing, looking for solutions to the problems plaguing life in SBC. Got a question, need an answer? Call the Red Phone – always listening, always online, always at 635-9219.

Weed control

A caller wonders now that the downtown beautification project is old news, who will handle the weeds.

“Now that the sidewalk renovation project is complete, who is going to eradicate the weeds growing between the pavers?”

The caller is talking about the brick in-lays crews installed along the sidewalks in downtown Hollister. Red Phone called Hollister Redevelopment Director Billy Avera and learned the city will be responsible for weed control because the city is responsible for the sidewalks. However, he doesn’t believe weeds will be a terrible problem.

“I believe there is some lime mixed with the base material that should keep the weeds down, but weeds always seem to show up,” he said. “Obviously, it’s the city’s responsibility to maintain the sidewalks, but we may ask some store owners and the HDA (Hollister Downtown Association) for help.”

Red Phone on Hold

Bring back the box

When it rains, it pours. Another caller wondered where he should take his mail, now that the post box on the corner of Sixth and San Benito streets is gone.

“Whatever happened to that mailbox on the corner of Sixth Street and San Benito? I used to use it all the time, but when they did the sidewalks downtown they took the mailbox away and never brought it back. I’d really like to see it returned because it’s quite a long way to another drop box and I don’t want to leave my mail in my mailbox because I’m worried someone will steal it.”

Red Phone assumes you mean steal your mail, not the mailbox – right? Anyway, since Avera was already on the line the Crimson Crusader asked what happened with the box. Avera said he didn’t know the mailbox was missing in the first place and thinks it may have just been overlooked in the many details involved with project. He promised to check into the problem and hopes to bring the box back downtown, he said.

“I’ll check into it,” Avera said. “It doesn’t seem like we shouldn’t have a post office box somewhere downtown. I hate to give you an off-the-cuff answer like this, but we will certainly look into it and try to replace it. I’ll find out what the deal is – nobody has ever mentioned it before.”

Sounds good Billy, but until then, Red Phone’s going to put the issue on hold. Want the mailbox back? Call up Billy Avera and let him know how you feel.
