Samantha Moreno scores two goals, one in the 76th minute, to
lead the Lady ‘Balers past Notre Dame 2-1; San Benito’s game
against Gilroy has been moved to Gilroy on Monday night
Salinas – Samantha Moreno scored two goals, one of which came with four minutes remaining in the game, and the San Benito girls soccer team rebounded with a 2-1 victory against Notre Dame Friday.

Moreno scored in the 24th minute off an assist from Hannah Cobb to put the Lady ‘Balers up 1-nil in the first half.

However, with a “howling” wind at their backs, the Spirits tied the game in the 55th minute.

“They had the wind at their backs, so they were shooting a lot,” coach Mike Schurig said.

Both teams tried to use the forceful wind to their advantage, as San Benito out-shot Notre Dame 9-5 in the first half, while the Spirits out-shot the ‘Balers 10-4 in the second.

“They definitely took advantage of that,” Schurig said of the wind.

With only four shots in the second half, though, San Benito made them count. Moreno’s second score came in the 76th minute off an assist from Sophie Coelho, and the Lady ‘Balers immediately went into defensive mode from there, dropping as many as eight players back on defense.

“Then we just played defense. The wind was a 12th, 13th, 14th man on their side,” Schurig said. “We just made sure we kept the ball out of there.”

San Benito (9-4-1, 4-2-1 TCAL) will play Gilroy on Monday night.

Due to poor field conditions at Hollister, the game was been switched to Gilroy High School on Monday night. Kick-off for the junior varsity is 4:30 p.m. Kick-off for the varsity is 6:30 p.m.
