Morgan Hill’s Shadow Mountain Baptist Church welcomes South Country residents to a special event Sunday, Nov. 1. According to invitations being distributed door-to-door by members of the congregation, “People all over are trying to find the perfect fit. From clothes to cars to communities, finding just the right fit is important to most people. Finding a great church is just as important.”
Community Connection Day will begin with a morning worship service held at 10:30 in the church’s new sanctuary, 17810 Monterey St. Bright and spacious, seating 445 comfortably. It includes a baptistery for total immersion baptisms and a state-of-the-art sound/video booth. Attendants will ensure that everyone finds parking, and greeters will guide visitors to available seating.
The service in the new 445-seat facility will feature a relevant, Bible-based message by Pastor Kyle Hanes, traditional hymns led by the church’s choir and special music provided by an ensemble and vocal trio.
After the service, all in attendance can stop by the Visitor Welcome Center to have any questions answered and to receive a free welcome gift. Then everyone is invited to come next door to the historic Morgan Hill House and enjoy a delicious lunch provided by the church.
Shadow Mountain Baptist Church has been a South County success story. In 1957, a handful of Christians started meeting in a resident’s garage and adopted the name “Valley Baptist Church.” Since then membership has ebbed and flowed under a succession of 14 pastors.
In 1998, the church averaged only 12 worshipers at services and was facing extinction. It was restructured under new leadership, adopted its current name and began an amazing growth in attendance, averaging 350 weekly now.
Outgrowing its old site on Llagas Road, the congregation purchased property on Monterey Street north of downtown and moved its affiliated school there in 2008. Moving worship services to this campus completed phase two of development. Future plans call for a 500-seat auditorium, plus additional classrooms and offices to be built on vacant land at the back of the property.
Connection Sunday is a chance for the community to learn about the many activities, groups and ministries available at Shadow Mountain. Sundays offer many opportunities for families:
– Adult Bible classes are divided into five different “life stages,” and there is also a Teen Bible Study, all held at 9:30 a.m.
– Children’s Sunday School at 9:30 a.m.
– Adult morning Worship and children’s church at 10:30 a.m.
– Spanish adult Bible study at 11 a.m.
– Spanish worship service at 12 p.m.
– Evening worship service at 6 p.m.
– Wednesday features Teen Soulwinning at 3:30 p.m., midweek Bible study at 7 p.m. and Awana Clubs, a Christian scout-like organization that provides education and fun activities for children, at 7 p.m.
The church has an active youth group called Extreme Teens that provides fun, fellowship, “Biblical life lessons” and spiritual growth. They meet for a class on Sunday morning at 9:30 and Wednesday for Soulwinning at 3:30 and Bible Study at 7 p.m. They also hold regular activities like barbecues, camping, scavenger hunts and ski trips.
