WATSONVILLE
The Anzar High girls basketball team stayed close until the very end Friday, but host Monte Vista Christian pulled away with a 38-22 victory in a non-conference game in Watsonville.
Alyssa Rodriguez led the Hawks with seven points, seven rebounds and four steals in the loss, which saw Anzar held to single digit scoring totals in each quarter.
The Hawks are now 1-3 overall on the season.
“We were still within striking range. We were within striking range for most of the game until they pulled away at the end,” Anzar head coach Aaron Netzel said. “We’re having a little bit of a hard time. But in the end, I think we’re gonna benefit from it.”
Freshman Kelsey Robledo pulled down seven boards to go along with her four points, while Allison Baker had three points, three rebounds and two blocks.
Anzar trailed MVC 22-15 at halftime.
The Hawks will host three home games next week in San Juan Bautista. They will play Soledad on Tuesday and Greenfield on Thursday. Tip-off for both games will be at 6:30 p.m.
On Saturday, the Hawks will host St. Lawrence at Anzar High at 12:30 p.m.
