Dear Editor,

I’d like to thank reporter Katie Niekerk for the article on the new block scheduling options at Gavilan College. This new option, for slightly longer class periods meeting fewer days per week, will give students more flexibility in balancing classes, work and family responsibilities. By requiring fewer days on campus, the schedule can help students save on gas and have more control over their study time.

I’d like to clarify a few important points: block scheduled classes will be offered for spring during mornings and afternoons (and evenings) and the majority of block-scheduled classes are transferable to the schools within the University of California or California State University system. Students who wish to attend classes in the mornings will still be able to do so.

We recognize that our students have diverse needs and interests and this is one way we are providing more options to better meet those needs.

After the holidays, counselors will be available to help students choose the classes that are needed to attain their goals. To meet with a counselor who can help you design an educational plan that’s right for you, call (408) 848-4723.
