Dear Editor

No job posting! No job description! No interview process! Hollister School District (HSD) decided to hire an administrator to collect test data without following any acceptable procedures for creating this job that was formerly held by a clerical employee.

The quote by Margie Barrios in the article entitled “Union Derided HSD Cuts” (Free Lance Sept. 23) is erroneous. There was no “interview” done with teachers in the last two years. The teachers did not ask for data to be compiled or for a job to be created in the district to be held by management position. I don’t know where Mrs. Barrios got that information, and I’m sure she is under the assumption that an “interview” was conducted. But no interview took place. I cannot state that more emphatically.

The HSD School Board needs to be more diligent about the truth of what it is told. It would be nice if the school board did have conversations with teachers about issues facing the district instead of taking the word of management at face value.

Furthermore, we consider the creation of a new management position at the district level to be a very “big deal.” That $79,000 to $89,000 is enough to hire two new teachers, which would help relieve some of our overcrowded classrooms.

The HSD School Board needs to take a good look at information it receives before it makes decisions. There is a school board election coming up in November. Hollister Elementary School Teacher’s Association believes some “new blood” is definitely needed in the make up of the board.

Honor, integrity, and fiscal responsibility need to be the code words for any member of the school board.
