The Hollister City Council chambers are getting a long-overdue makeover.

Remodeling that began this week includes a new paint job, recarpeting and reupholstering of the gallery seats. Additionally, the city manager’s office is receiving improvements that include a new paint job, recarpeting and new window blinds.

The total cost of the remodeling will be about $13,500, according to Nichole Anglin, executive assistant to the city manager. About $7,600 of that is going to the Council chambers. The rest is for the city manager’s office.

Anglin began organizing the improvements when Interim City Manager Ed Kreins arrived in mid-January as the temporary successor to George Lewis. Kreins noticed lumps in his office floor and saw a need for the remodeling in the Council chambers. He immediately asked Anglin to explore budget options for the work.

“I talked to (City Finance Director) Barbara Mullholland,” Anglin said, “and she told me the city had a budget for improvements for the city manager’s office and the chambers.”

The city contracted the work to three different local businesses, one each for carpeting, painting and upholstery. The cost for the projects came to $300 under the budget, according to Anglin.

Anglin said the city has budgeted for the improvements since at least 1999, when an interior designer started work on the remodeling – and stopped.

“It didn’t get through, for whatever reason,” Anglin said.

The wooden dais where the Councilmembers sit is noticeably scratched and damaged. But city maintenance workers will sand and refinish it because, according to Anglin, it’s “still in good condition.”

The city hopes to have the remodeling finished by the next Council meeting Feb. 18, Anglin said.
