As the Hollister Independence Rally Committee continues preparation for the 2003 motorcycle rally July 4-6, Michael Chappelear has officially replaced Pat Akins as president of the committee.

The change was part of the annual installation of new officers. Chappelear previously involved himself for four years in other aspects of planning the annual rally and sat on the HIRC board for the last three.

Chappelear expressed an interest in the position this year. It came down to a vote between himself and Akins.

Chappelear said he wants to put more emphasis on community involvement and raising the donations for the 2003 event.

One idea of his that’s already becoming a reality this year is an open house sometime after Jan. 1, Chappelear said. HIRC will invite members of the public interested in asking questions and getting involved.

“We want to give the community better understanding of what goes into the rally,” he said.

Other board members for 2003 include Bill Rodgers, Dave Ventura, Karen Mulligan, Bob Beals, Jeff Commins, Marlon Moss and Akins.

HIRC has yet to announce specific information on the festivities at the 2003 rally.

“We haven’t picked an opening (music) headliner or anything like that,” Chappelear said. But he said HIRC is well into planning the event, and vendor response has been excellent again this year, he said.

“It’s a year-round process,” he said.
