Parks commission receives Health Trust grant

The San Benito County Parks and Recreation commissioners received word this week that they will receive a grant from the Health Trust. The Health Trust awarded the county $61,500 for the first phase of looking into creating a special district that would support parks and recreation in the county.

Celebrate local parks on July 28

The inaugural San Benito County Parks Celebration is July 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the San Benito County Historical Park, in Tres Pinos.

New gymnastics location in Morgan Hill

California Sports Center (CSC) celebrates its 25th anniversary with the grand opening of a new gymnastics facility in Morgan Hill, its seventh facility in San Clara County. The facility 16959 Monterey Road in Morgan Hill, will be completely renovated and equipped with all new state-of-the-art equipment. The 6,000 square foot gym will be home to both boys and girls ages from 18 months to 18 years old. CSC will provide preschool, recreational and team classes for the children and families in Morgan Hill and surrounding areas. The programs will teach how to perform level appropriate routines, just like a competitive gymnast where students enjoy a “Gold Medal Day” graduation every eight weeks where they earn the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned in front of a live audience of friends, family and staff.

The Barn at Hoey Ranch grand opening

On June 21, the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce helped celebrate the opening of The Barn at Hoey Ranch with owners, Jim and Debbie Hoey. Known to rise before daylight and travel to remote parts of the state, the Hoey’s have stocked their barn with unique and one-of-a-kind indoor and outdoor treasures they have discovered on their trips. Visit the Barn, 2480 Hecker Pass Road in Gilroy, Friday, Saturday and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bloody pit bull attack at Starbucks

Those passing through Starbucks on First Street and Wren Avenue for their morning lattes were taken aback when the coffee shop’s parking lot turned into a blood-spattered scene around 7:30 a.m. Thursday. The owner of a pit bull fled the scene after his dog allegedly attacked a smaller dog in the parking lot, giving it serious injuries that led to its euthanization, and sending its owner to the hospital.

Top 5: ‘Bon Voyage’ concert; Open Mic Night and more

Choir sings ‘Bon Voyage’ before trip to Olympics: The Monterey Peninsula Choral Society will present a “Bon Voyage” concert, Spirit & Song: An Olympic Journey, at St. Benedict Church, 1200 Fairview Road, Hollister, July 13 at 8 p.m. Admission is free although a donation of $20 would be appreciated. Police looking for suspects in liquor store armed robbery

Police are asking for the public's help in identifying the suspects in an armed robbery at a downtown liquor store last weekend.

Former Hollister Heat treasurer accused of embezzling

The former treasurer of the Hollister Heat softball organization was arraigned Tuesday on charges alleging she embezzled thousands of dollars from the group between May 2009 and June 2011, according to court records and authorities.  

Effort to name Pinnacles a national park sent to House

An effort to have Pinnacles National Monument reclassified as a national park received a boost Thursday when a key committee OK’d the legislation and sent it to the House of Representatives, according to a statement from The Wilderness Society.

Shout outs for some locals

Shout Out #1 goes to Charles Weston and his volunteers for another great race on July 4th, the Freedom Fest 5k and 1 mile. There were over 760 runners this year, and the kids accounted for about half of that total.
