The Hazel Hawkins Hospitals Auxiliary raised $20,000 in scholarships for 17 recipients, according to an announcement.

David Kaplansky was on a recruiting trip when he walked into the Humboldt State University gymnasium in the summer of 1996. The only person there was a man dripping with sweat wearing board shorts and beat-up sneakers. Of course, it was Gene Cotter.

Three seats on the Gavilan College Board of Trustees are up for grabs in the November election, and interested candidates can start submitting nomination paperwork July 18. The deadline to qualify for a spot on the ballot is Aug. 12.

There aren’t too many places left in the nation where a student can ride a horse to school, but San Benito County is one of them.

The new president and superintendent of Gavilan College is no stranger to the tree-lined campus. For seven years Kathleen Rose has served as the school’s executive vice president and chief instruction officer. Named by the Gavilan Joint Community College District Board of Trustees at their meeting on June 14, following a nationwide search to replace outgoing president Steven M. Kinsella, Rose will lead the school as it expands to new campuses at Coyote Valley and in Hollister and gets ready to celebrate the school’s 100th year serving South Valley and San Benito County communities.
