The theatre season is rolling along into 2014 and 2015 with a menu of shows that will have something to please everyone. Here is an overview of what will play in San Jose and San Francisco.
San Jose
Broadway San Jose at the Center For the Performing Arts offers the delightful “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Coat” (May 27-June 1), the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Mix country-western and calypso with pop and rock ‘n’ roll, and you have an unexpected magical musical.
Next is the ever-popular “Jersey Boys” (July 16-20). This is the heartfelt story of the Four Seasons and how a handshake made a success and Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famers of these blue-collar kids.
The season completes with the fascinating “Wicked” (Aug. 27-Sept. 14). Ever wonder how the Wicked Witch of the West got her title and became green?

San Francisco
Best of Broadway continues its 2013-14 season with “Mamma Mia” (March 28-April 6) and the wonderful music of ABBA; “Once” (June 17-July 13); and the rousing Broadway revival of “Pippin” (Sept. 23-Oct. 19).
San Francisco’s Best of Broadway will welcome 2014-15 with “Motown The Musical” (Aug. 15-Sept. 28), which includes an array of Motown songs, including those made famous by Diana Ross, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson Five and many more.
The blockbuster “Kinky Boots” (Dec. 2-28), with the award-winning score by Cyndi Lauper, tells a fantastically funny fable of how to save a failing shoe factory.
The Broadway spectacular “Newsies” (Feb. 17-March 15, 2015) opens 2015 with the historic New York Newsboy Strike in 1899. It includes an award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, and amazing choreography by Christopher Gattelli.
This will be followed by the smash Broadway hit “Matilda” (July 15-Aug. 15, 2015) from Roald Dahl’s story with a memorable score that tells the story of a young girl’s rebellion against adult repression.
Finally, “The Phantom Of The Opera” returns Aug. 26-Oct. 4, 2015.
