Fencing Exhibition

Gavilan College fencing instructor John de Cesare and his students invite the public to watch their first Fencing Exhibition, this Saturday, May 21, from noon to 2 p.m. on the lawn in front of the Briggs Building, corner of Fourth and San Benito Street in Hollister.

Community Services & Workforce Development seek Employers

The Community Services and Workforce Development Department is currently seeking interested employers for work experience positions for our local youth this summer. Forty or more youth, ages 14-21 years of age, who have completed a work readiness workshop will be available to work up to ten weeks this summer. If your business is interested in providing a work experience opportunity for one of our local youth, please call CSWD. Wages and worker’s comp paid for by CSWD.

Leadership San Benito County is a county-wide leadership development program. Each year approximately 35 people will be trained through this professional course. Assist in Asthma Education

The American Lung Association of Santa Clara-San Benito Counties needs your help with their Open Airways for Schools program. The program is designed to empower 8- to 11-year-olds and their parents to take control of asthma. Children who participate learn to better manage their asthma, earn higher grades and build self esteem. The program consists of five weekly lessons at four Hollister elementary schools. Volunteers will be presenting an easy-to-teach, entertaining lesson that is educational and fun.

Parents Assuring Student Success

Parents of students at San Benito High School can help their children achieve success in school by attending PASS (Parents Assuring Student Success) classes. Taught by the school’s math division chairwoman Debbie Fisher, each class will deal with a different topic – from note-taking to study skills to preparing for tests. Classes are every Thursday through June and meet from 6:30pm to 9pm in Room 450 at San Benito High School. Meetings will be held May 26 and June 2.

Road Construction

Contractors will perform a pavement overlay and road reconstruction on the following streets in Hollister this week: South Street, Line Street, Seventh Street, Powell Street, Line Street,

Hillcrest Road and Highland Drive.

Construction hours are from 7am to 6pm, Monday through Friday.

Support Vets with Buddy Poppies

For more than 75 years, the little red Buddy Poppy has been distributed to benefit America’s veterans and their families. Local member of the Ladies Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars will be distributing Buddy Poppies on May 21 from 9am-4pm at various locations including the Post Office and Nob Hill. Buddy Poppies will also be sold at the Windmill and the post office in San Juan Bautista. Make a donation and proudly wear a Buddy Poppy.

The Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) is hosting a pet adoption fair on Saturday, May 21 from 12-5pm at the Petco on San Ysidro Ave. in Gilroy. Stop by to adopt a pet, meet volunteers or make a donation to support animal rescue efforts.

Western Stage Auditions

The Western Stage Young Company is holding auditions on May 21 and 22 for its 2005 summer youth programs. Young people between the ages of 8 and 20 are encouraged to take part in this opportunity that will help the unlock their creative potential and help build their self-esteem.

Weekend Street Closures

Some streets will be close to traffic in San Juan Bautista due to the Gold Coast Rods Car Show. The following streets will be closed May 21-22: Third Street between Muckelemi and Franklin, Washington between Second and Fourth streets, Mariposa between Second and Fourth streets and Polk Street between Second and Fourth streets.

Armed Forces Celebration

An Armed Forces Day celebration to publically honor and thank our military neighbors and their families on Saturday, May 21 at the Veterans Memorial Building, located at Seventh and San Benito streets. The event will be held from noon-4pm. A ceremony will be held at 12:30pm followed by refreshments and deserts.

The San Benito Oriana Chorale will hold their a Emmaus House Benefit Performance at First Presbyterian Church in Hollister on May 23 at 7:30pm. They will also hold at concert at Mission San Juan Bautista on May 26 at 7:30pm and their annual Dinner show will be on June 4.

OHV Meeting

The San Benito County Sherriff’s Department will hold a public meeting at 7pm on May 25 in the Board of Supervisors’ Chambers to discuss an application for the Off Highway Vehicle Grant, which provides funding for deputies to patrol illegal off-highway vehicles use in San Benito County.
