The San Benito High girls soccer team suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season on Monday when they lost 1-0 to Notre Dame at Cal State University – Monterey Bay in Seaside.

Coupled with last week’s 3-0 loss at Gilroy, the Lady ‘Balers currently sit at 3-2-2 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 11-3-3 overall.

“We’ve had two games that we were unable to capitalize on,” San Benito head coach Ben Alvarez said. “We’ve got to get back into things here, back to the practice field and work on finishing.”

San Benito has gone from second to fourth place in those two games, although both Notre Dame and Salinas have played one additional league game. With Gilroy (21 points) well ahead atop the TCAL, Notre Dame (15 points), Salinas (13 points) and San Benito (11 points) are currently jockeying for the prized second-place standing.

“We’re still confident we can get the next three games,” Alvarez said. “We had opportunities (against Notre Dame). We crossed the line quite often and were creating opportunities, but they were playing very well defensively.”

And the Spirits are certainly known for their defense. The last time San Benito played Notre Dame, the two teams finished in a scoreless tie.

“We would get into the 18, but our kicks were not strong enough,” Alvarez said.

Notre Dame took the lead in the first half when Annika Rose deposited the game’s lone goal.

“She took a shot from way back and it got my goalie out of position,” Alvarez said. “It paid off for them.”

While the Spirits took five shots on net, San Benito took seven, including a strong attempt from Daniela Ocampo.

“She took a nice shot from the left side in the second half,” Alvarez said, “but the goalie was well positioned.

“It was a tough game, well played. But we just could not put it in the net.”

San Benito will look to rebound Friday when they host Alisal in Hollister. Kick-off is at 3:30 p.m.
