The county board Tuesday is set to get a presentation on an idea of turning the former convalescent hospital on Southside Road into the permanent location for a new homeless shelter.

The Homeless Task Force of San Benito County is proposing the use. The former hospital features many bathrooms and small rooms, and county officials once had considered the site as a one-stop permit center. The design of the building, which task force leaders believe fits the necessities for a shelter, halted the permit center idea from going through.

County Administrative Officer Susan Thompson said the task force brought it to the board to see if there is any interest in converting the site to a homeless shelter.

The board of supervisors will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the County Administrative Building, 481 Fourth St.

Also on the agenda:

The board will hear a presentation from the county’s private auditor, Grace and Associates, regarding the 2008 comprehensive annual financial report.

“This is the first time we’ve been able to do a CAFR,” Thompson said. “We’re in good shape and the books are in good shape.”

The board will then move to accept the findings of the report.

Supervisors also will discuss the concept of a new regional park and direct staff to look into funding and feasibility of the potential project.

“It’s a great idea and we’ll see where it goes,” Thompson said.

Possible locations could be on Nash Road or Union Road in conjunction with the riverway trail.

Funding for the project would come from the 2009-10 recommended budget, costing an estimated $2.5 million.
