Anzar’s Erik Olson hits last-second shot, Hawks defeat King City
52-50
San Juan Bautista – Erik Olson’s buzzer-beater from just inside the arc pushed the Anzar boys basketball team past King City Thursday night in San Juan Bautista, as the Hawks edged the Mustangs 52-50.
“It was a buzzer-beater right inside the 3-point line,” coach Ed Cecena said. “We played big.”
Olson had 14 points on the night, but pulled down 21 rebounds and blocked eight shots. Anzar’s big man also dished off six assists.
Steven Mockabee led the Hawks with a team-high 17 points. The guard had 10 boards and seven steals.
“It was a great lift. I was really happy with the intensity and the effort level,” Cecena said. “Tonight, we were excited to play and it showed.”
Cecena said it was a back-and-forth game for much of the contest. After King City tied the game at 50, Anzar called a timeout with 11 seconds remaining in regulation.
“We put the ball in Erik’s hands,” Cecena said, “and he hit the winning shot.”
The victory snaps a three-game losing streak for the Hawks, who improve to 1-1 in the Mission Trail Athletic League, 6-10 overall.
Anzar will host Robert Louis Stevenson Saturday in San Juan Bautista. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
