Salinas – The San Benito Lady ‘Balers fell just one stroke short of nabbing first place in group play Tuesday at the Salinas Fairways Golf Course.

San Benito’s 190 was good enough for second, but placed them just behind first-place Salinas, who carded a team score of 189.

Gilroy came in third with a 236, Live Oak finished fourth with a 250, and Alvarez rounded out the group play with a 252.

The team scores for Gilroy and San Benito will count twice in the year-end standings, as the previous group play on Sept. 19 was rescheduled for both teams.

Lady ‘Baler Marissa Gutierrez recorded a 41 on Tuesday, while Katie O’Brien shot a 46 on the par 36 at Salinas Fairways. Alexis Sanchez finished with a 51, Amanda Frey and Kendall Archer completed their rounds with a 52, and Jenny Glosser finished with a 54.

“Overall, if you look at the scores, I didn’t have anyone in the 60s,” said coach Chris Branon, pleased with his team’s scores. “Scores that are below 55 are really impressive. We were the only team that had that.”

Taylor Camany of Salinas was the medalist for the round, shooting a 39.

The Lady ‘Balers will play today at Monte Vista Christian at 3:30pm.

Fundraiser Golf Tournament

The San Benito Lady ‘Balers will hold their Third Annual Fundraising Golf Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club. The format will be a four-person scramble.

The price of the scramble is $100 per player, with all funds going directly to the Lady ‘Baler golf team. Price includes greens fees, range balls, cart and dinner. Non-golfing dinner tickets are available for $30 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. Activities include a putting contest, skills challenge, raffle and auction.

If you don’t have a foursome, you will be paired with others. Check-in is at 11am. The skills challenge will be at 11:15am to 12:15pm, while a shotgun start will be at 12:30pm.
