Letter: Hoping Republicans become the minority in houses
Every Republican in the House voted to replace Medicare with a voucher system. This benefits insurance companies, Super American Citizens, at the expense of Real American Citizens who see the doctor, stay in the hospital, need real medical attention. Every Republican in the House voted to cut benefits for Real Citizens, medical benefits for women, instead of cutting benefits to oil companies, Super Citizens, to pay for the Student Loan Program. We can hope that Real Citizens have the wisdom to let Republicans become the Minority in the House and the Super Minority in the Senate. Real Citizens vote June 5 and November 6.
Letter: San Juan School parent group lauds Dual Language Academy
The Parent Group of The Dual Immersion Language Program at San Juan School would like to congratulate the Hollister Dual Language Academy on being honored as one of this years "Distinguished Schools" in California. Your school is a role model showing team work, dedication, and long term commitment to producing more bilingual and biliterate citizens in San Benito County. Thank you for leading the way for other Dual Language Programs in our area and California. Keep up the outstanding work.
Water Cooler: Should out-of-state, online companies pay local sales taxes?
Julie Morris: “Yes. Sales tax should go to the county where the item was purchased. Transactions could be easily linked by zip code, with an EFT deposited directly into San Benito County’s account. All income from the account could be allocated toward local infrastructure, capital improvements, and/ or programs (i.e: economic development, recreational activities) that improve the community’s quality of life, rather than funding salaries, pensions or benefits. Over time, this could equal millions of dollars for our county.”
Free Lance Editorial: City shirks responsibility to protect public
By failing to identify and appoint a permanent chief of police, the majority of the Hollister City Council and City Manager Clint Quilter have shirked their responsibility of protecting the public to the best of their ability with the available resources.
Pinnacle Editorial: Rehab program deserves support
The San Benito County Behavioral Health Department received a much-needed boost for a sober-living program that should help many individuals clean up their lives while curtailing recidivism rates of local inmates.
Water Cooler: Is the Arizona immigration law racial profiling?
Richard Place: “No. Law officers are sworn to uphold the law and enforce it. Is if profiling because you’re born in the United States and required to carry a driver’s license? When a driver is asked for his drivers license, that’s not profiling it’s enforcing the law. If the Federal Government fails to follow up on its responsibility, which was given by the States to the Federal Government, then they must assume the responsibility. Someone has to stop the terrorists from coming across the border.”
Free Lance Editorial: Authorities must walk fine line with new rescue group
Local authorities are right to be skeptical of a new animal rescue organization in the area - due to its lacking communication and the appearance it intends to declare some level of policing authority - but should avoid any contractual arrangements and anything else that might play into its hands down the road.
Letter: Hollister has no-kill shelters
The front page article about the Humane Society of the Central Coast might lead one to believe that there is a huge void in San Benito County for no-kill animal shelters. San Benito County and the Central Coast, in general, have a large number of nonprofit rescues and no-kill shelters, including but not limited to the local 501(c)(3) organizations, Pet Friends & Rescue, All Creatures Great and Small, SHARE Animal Rescue, and Bad Dawgs Rescue. The Central Coast is also supported by the Monterey and Santa Cruz SPCA organizations.

Letter: Farr connects agriculture and nutrition
On April 11, Congressman Sam Farr visited San Benito County. The Congressman spoke about his passion for access to healthy foods. Congressman Farr, sits on the Appropriations Committee and Subcommittees on Agriculture, Rural Development and Food and Drug Administration. In his position, he advocates for agriculture and access to healthy foods. He works hard to ensure that supplemental food assistance programs, like WIC, are funded. At San Benito Health Foundation, we offer medical, dental and Woman, Infants and Children (WIC) services.
