Letter: Selective reporting on the Brown Act
COG's Directors violate the Brown Act's requirements time and again, year after year, even after the taxpayers sued them to stop, and even after we asked the Grand Jury to do something about it, and even after I got the AG's opinion (not a newspaper association's attorney's opinion) that the JPAs (joint power authorities) had to comply with the Brown Act, and even after the VTA's G.M.'s letter was published in your newspaper (in Hollister even though VTA has no legal standing in SBC), but you ignore it and then write about the Gavilan College Trustee's alleged Brown Act violation one time?
Free Lance Editorial: A chance to reflect on the fire deal
The only clarity out of the recent debate on San Benito County's contracted fire service is that officials involved with the decision did a poor job of explaining the proposed arrangements from Calfire and Hollister.
Marty: The pear-shaped world of the future
My wife and I have two children in their 40s, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Two of the grand children are in their 20s and two are just entering primary school; our great-grandchild is just a toddler and I wonder what the future holds in store for the all of them and their families – what will the world will be like in 35 or 70 years?
Guest View: Grads should strive for future, but take time to relax
To moms whose kids have to memorize high school graduation speeches this month: nothing makes a speech more unforgettable than forgetting it for a split-second – in front of 3,000 people. (One of us learned that the hard way.) So if you invite every living relative to “Mom’s pre-ceremony fiesta,” please let your grad slip away to rehearse.
Free Lance Editorial: Council takes easy road with 5-cent mileage
Hollister officials have proven once again - in their decision to charge a police captain 5 cents a mile to commute 100 miles round trip in a patrol car - that they have no collective backbone.
Free Lance Editorial: Investigation needed into allegations over fire contract
Hollister Councilman Doug Emerson has alleged that he and a city employee were threatened by political consultant Rick Rivas that his brother, Supervisor Robert Rivas, might flip his vote and oppose a $1.1 million annual fire contract with the city unless Emerson did a political favor – namely, prompt cancellation of a San Juan town hall meeting held in April over the matter.

Letter: Councilman claims supervisor’s brother made threat over fire vote
Hollister City Councilman Doug Emerson submitted this letter to the editor. Look back for a story on the matter.
Pinnacle Editorial: Homeless advocates make laudable effort with grant
A recent grant award to the Homeless Coalition of San Benito County will go a long way toward helping to curtail a big problem locally and motivate people to improve their livelihoods.
Letter: Hoping Republicans become the minority in houses
Every Republican in the House voted to replace Medicare with a voucher system. This benefits insurance companies, Super American Citizens, at the expense of Real American Citizens who see the doctor, stay in the hospital, need real medical attention. Every Republican in the House voted to cut benefits for Real Citizens, medical benefits for women, instead of cutting benefits to oil companies, Super Citizens, to pay for the Student Loan Program. We can hope that Real Citizens have the wisdom to let Republicans become the Minority in the House and the Super Minority in the Senate. Real Citizens vote June 5 and November 6.
