Pinnacle Editorial: Business growth, not just housing, needed on west side

It appears Hollister officials are making efforts - and following a reasonable path - to address a daunting necessity for more affordable housing here. They have not, however, done enough to balance the need for affordable housing on the poverty-stricken west side with a task that is just as important: Taking proactive measures to boost the economy and business prospects in that area of Hollister.

Water Cooler: Should TV networks be censored?

Nants Foley: “The FCC should not continue its censorship. The American people can do that themselves with their remote controls!”

Pinnacle Editorial: State should give cities more time to deal with RDA demise

The sudden jolt that is the demise of the Hollister Redevelopment Agency and more than 400 others throughout California has prompted a state senate bill that legislators should approve to prevent mishaps and allow for a smoother transition.

Letters: Reader sees good in RDA demise

“Ding dong the Witch is dead!” The witch in this case is the Hollister Redevelopment Agency. For example, imagine, if you will an agency which agreed to rent the entire Porter House for $4,000 per month to house a handful of employees; a $5 million downtown firehouse for a handful of firefighters; please. It becomes all too apparent that spending practices are grossly out of whack. The RDA is a spending engine! And the City of Hollister simply cannot afford an indulgent RDA.

Free Lance Editorial: Hollister council loses control at hearing

Councilwoman Pauline Valdivia tainted the debate last week about an affordable housing proposal by not only veering the discussion and making a ludicrous claim that there is no proof of illegal immigrants living on Hollister's west side, but also spuriously painting others as discriminatory in the process.

Letters: Reader laments the idea of ‘Mission Accomplished’

Finally, “Mission accomplished” In Iraq? But what really was the mission and what did it accomplish? We were mislead into almost 9 years of war by President Bush and V.P. Cheney, who still tries to justify it. He said we would be greeted as liberators. However the end result seems to be resentment and hatred by much of the Muslim world towards the “liberators.” The war was prosecuted on the basis Iraq  had W. M. D. There is still no evidence any existed.

Free Lance Editorial: With ruling, HSD group should accept cuts

It was no surprise that a fact-finding panel recently ruled in favor of the Hollister School District, which had come to impasse in talks with the classified bargaining unit representing about 200 employees, and now it is in the union’s hands to do the right thing and accept the brunt of this reasonable offer from administrators.

Water Cooler: Should California abandon the death penalty?

Julie Morris: “The death penalty is expensive, fallible and unjust. Since 1978 thirteen executions have cost California taxpayers $4 billion, money siphoned from public safety and schools. We pay roughly $100 million annually for each of the 720 inmates on death row and it takes an average of 25 years to get from conviction to execution, delaying justice for victims' families. California can't afford the death penalty: it's much more cost effective to sentence dangerous criminals to life in prison without possibility of parole and start using taxpayer dollars on programs that benefit law abiding Californians.”
